Cosmetic Dentistry: The Beginning and End of Dental Implants Procedure

February 15, 2022

A cosmetic dentist knows that dental implants in Sioux City are an exceptional alternative to dentures or dental bridges that don't fit well in your teeth. How dental implant procedures are performed depends on what type of implant works for you and the current condition of the jawbone.

It may have several steps in the procedure. The primary benefit of implants is that you’ll have good support for your teeth. It involves a process that requires the bone and tissues in your teeth to heal around the implant.

The Dental Implants Procedure

Schedule a Consultation with Your Dentist First

You'll need to have a consultation with your prosthodontist, dentist, or oral surgeon once you decide to replace your damaged or missing teeth through a dental implant treatment. Before going to the procedure, you might want to know and choose what types you need.

  • Subperiosteal implants are metal posts that are slipped onto your jawbone. The frame will combine with the jawbone after the artificial tooth is attached to the post during the healing process.
  • Endosteal implants are directly applied to your jawbone. After healing its surrounding tissues, you will need to schedule follow-up visits to connect a post to the implant before attaching the artificial tooth to the base.

Damaged Tooth Extraction

If you are restoring a crooked or damaged tooth, you're going to need to have it extracted. This is a standard procedure that will require an anesthetic and will take time to heal.

Bone Grafting

If your jawbone is not durable enough, your dentist will take a portion of the bone from another area and add it to your jaw in preparation for your implants. Other times, artificial bone-grafting material can be used as an alternative.

Once it is set in place, it will take at least four months up to a year to heal and be ready to support the implant. In some cases, if you only need minor bone grafting, the surgery can be done simultaneously as the implant procedure.

Application of Dental Implants

Once your tooth starts healing from any dental removal or bone grafting procedure, your dental expert will attach the implant in place by cutting into your gum and drilling it into your jawbone. The titanium rod will serve as the tooth root and is applied beneath the gum line that you won't be able to feel when it is already healed. Generally, the implant will take four months or more to combine with your jawbone.

Temporary Crown Placement and Abutment

After the surrounding tissue of the cap heals, it is discarded and restored by the dental implant support. The abutment is secured on it, and a temporary crown is then placed on top. This will stay in place for four to six weeks, allowing the gums to heal.

Permanent Placement of Crown

The permanent crown will be made while you are wearing the temporary one. It may take two to three weeks to complete. The abutment then be cemented or attached to it. Additionally, there is no noticeable screw hole in the crown, they are held in place by cement to appear more appealing.
